The Hague is where I live!  For directions to my new house click here.  The RidderZaal (Top left) is in the centre of Den Haag and is in the middle of the Dutch houses of Parliament.  The 2nd photo is of the Eerste Kamer (first room) of the Dutch government. There is an avenue of trees of one side with benches to sit on and can be a great place for sitting and admiring the view.  In the winter, this lake freezes over and the Dutch (who are fanatical skaters) skate all over it.  It's a wonderful sight!  Also in the area you have the Gevangenis Poort (prisoners gate), the Maurits Huis (a museum for paintings) and Queen Beatrix's working palace.

Koninginnenacht (the night before the Queen Mother's Birthday) A promotion for one of the many art exhibitions in the Mauritshuis
On the night of the 29th April the Hague (and most Dutch cities) celebrate Koninginnenacht (the night before the Queen Mothers birthday!)  You can compare it to New Years Eve but with lots of bands and warmer weather!  In 1998, De Kast and Anouk played (amongst others) Curfew in the Hague is strictly enforced!

Favourite Bars & Restaurants

De Bierkelder Jade, me and Monty in the Bier Kelder

Some of the friendly staff of the Bierkelder

De Bier Kelder, Buitenhof 8a (next to Havana's). My current favourite bar. A reasonable selection of beers including La Chouffe and Leffe on tap and about 40 beers in total. Good atmosphere and friendly staff (slightly insane but what do you expect from people who work with students???? :-) ).

The Paas. First bar in Den Haag with a barge outside. Has an excellent selection of Dutch Jenevers De Paas, Dunne Bierkade 16a, Tel.: 070-3600019, Number of beers: 150. On draught: 8. They have lots of types of Jenever's (Dutch gin) too.

"The Butter Scales" - An unusual bar. I assume that it used to be a warehouse or a church! It has a huge ceiling. More importantly it has a great selection of beers. It also has a reasonable selection of food.

St Patricks in the Shilleleigh. Anastassia, Stacey, me and Brad.St Patricks Day 1999
The Shilleleigh Irish Pub - Java Straat :- The friendliest Irish bar in the Hague. Friendly international bar staff who speak Dutch as well as English!
Cafe de Bok Papestraat 36, Tel (070) 3642162.  A reasonable selection of beers including Guinness, Duvel (pour carefully if you wish to a avoid a hangover) & kriek
Does a great cooked breakfast on a Sunday.  Real Fish & chips on a Saturday.Restaurants
Pinocchios - LangePoten (just off the Plein) , An excellent Italian restaurant with a huge choice of pizzas etc.
Wankele Tafel StaffDe Wankele Tafel Vegetarisch - The wobbly table vegetarian restaurant.  This place has real imagination when it comes to vegetarian food.  The atmosphere is superb!  Recommended by a local paper.  Mauritskade 79, phone 070 364 3267

Rootz Belgian RestaurantMy fellow food tasters....

Rootz - Open 11am-22pm. This is a great Belgian restaurant with a huge choice of beers! I've died and gone to heaven......

AVOID Alphonso's chain of Mexican restaurants.  I've been there twice, once in the Hague and once in Amsterdam, and both times the service has been unacceptably slow

The Direct Dutch 'Babes'Mark, one of my teachers at Direct Dutch (Anastassia is a fellow student)

Direct Dutch - Piet Heinplein 1 A 2518 CA Den Haag tel 070-3654677 fax 070-3561140 e-mail: info@directdutch.com website: www.directdutch.com -  a great language school to learn Dutch.

Fitness in The Hague

Studio 1 - Hoogstraat 27a - 070 3650827.  My aerobics/fitness studio.  A very friendly atmosphere with very competent friendly teachers.  The owners are a Dutch/English couple who also run the place (Emma is one of the teachers).  You'll see me here quite often, trying to counteract the beer! It's a GREAT gym!  I'm friends with the owners now.  They invited a few customers to their wedding last year.  I pay fl 75 for a months unlimited aerobics (fl 25 once off joining fee).  You can do a trial lesson for fl 7.50 which is returnable if you join.
