Scheveningen (don't try and pronounce it if you value your throat) lies on
the Dutch coast and has been absorbed into Den Haag/The Hague. From March/April
onwards the bars start to sprout out of the sand ready to catch the spring/summer
tourist trade. Once the weather gets hot then you'll find a flood of people
streaming towards the beckoning sands, sea (I woudln't recommend swimming in
it though!) and bars! It's a good idea to catch tram 1 or 9 from the central
station and avoid the major hassles of traffic jams (you didn't think that you'd
be the only one heading to the beach, did you?) and parking (if you manage to
get that far). You can get strippenkarts from the
central train station (don't buy them on the tram unless you have money to burn!)
for approx fl. 12 for 15 strips. You need to stamp 3 strips (by bending
it over 3 and stamping) to go to Scheveningen.
This is
the Kurhuis. A very famous (and expensive!) hotel.
Every summer you'll find lots to do. There's the North Sea Jazz Festival
in a weekend in July(?) also a sand castle building competition, a Smurfs festival
etc. Every Friday evening during the summer, there's a firework display
from the pier at around midnight. It's very good!

Drinks :- have
a look at my beer page if you're a beer
fan. If you like liquers then try Jenever. It's a Dutch variant
on gin.

Het Brouw Cafe, Dr. Lelykade 28, over by the harbour (070) 3540970. They brew their own beer on the premises and is well worth a visit. |
Local Delicacies
:- You should try poffertjes.
Try also the fantastic array of pancakes that you can get with some incredibly
strange toppings with fruits, meats, liquers etc. Scheveningen is also
a seaside fishing port so try some of the fresh fish.
