Antwerp's impressive Cathedral A very pretty Belgian city.  I prefer it by a long way to Brussels and almost as much as Brugge. The name comes from an old legend.  The legend says that there was a giant charging a toll to get over the bridge across the river Schelde.  A hero came and defeated the giant, cut off his hand and threw it in the river.  Hence ant (hand) werpen (to throw). If you see stone hands lying around or a statue of a man holding a dismembered hand then you'll know why!    Try a Belgian beer whilst sitting outside the Cathedral.  The bars are heated in the winter and the area makes a great sun trap in the summer.  The square has loads of tourists wandering through as all routes seem to end up here.  This makes it an excellent place to people watch.  The cathedral makes a very impressive backdrop.  The one weird thing about Antwerp is that there seems to be a few shops selling only Fridges & Footballs.  Can anyone tell me why? Statue in Antwerpen depicting the hand throwing (giving Antwerp it's name)

De Koninck De Koninck is brewed in Antwerp and is a pretty good beer with a very nice glass (a bollecke) (C-cup size, 33cl), a "fluitje" (flute, like Tuborg) or a "prinske" (A-cup size, 25cl). (thanks DarkMoonBEam for the info.)

Paters Vaetje :- It's usually very busy is the small but nice "Paters Vaetje" pub opposite to the cathedral's entrance, close to Het Putke. There are seats upstairs.

Rog and Dunc in the Waagstuk

Het Waagstuk (weighing station) 20 Stadsweg - Friendly knowledgeable service with a great atmosphere.

Het Elfde Gebod - The 11th Commandment Bar/Cafe

Another good one which deserves mention is Het Elfde Gebod (the 11th commandment - Thou Shalt enjoy).  This is on one side of the cathedral, on a corner of a cobbled/pedestrian street.  The walls are covered in hundreds of religious icons which makes quite an impression!

There are lots of fine Flemish restaurants in Antwerp where you can get excellent food and great beer too.
Gulden Swaene - a great restaurant! Gulden Swaene, Hendrik Conscienceplein 15 , phone +32 (0)3 233 1259

Mad, Rog & FionaThis is another good restaurant on the Hendrik Conscienceplein but I can't remember the name of it!

De Gulden Kroon

Antwerp Central train station's bar/cafe. Pretty eh!

This really is a cafe/bar!  If you arrive by train then take the time to visit Antwerpen Centraal station's cafe/bar.  It's beautiful inside and a great place to meet your friends.
