Nathalie had never been to the USA before and I'd never been to Seattle
so we decided to hop over the border. The 4 hour bus trip cost CDN
$56 each for a return. Going through American customs/Immigration
wasn't much fun! These guys LOVE to intimidate people and ask lots
of quick fire questions designed to make people slip up and reveal who/what
they're smuggling. Give me friendly Canadian immigration anyday!
The first thing you notice when coming into is the majestic skyline
dominated by skyscrapers and the Seattle
Space Needle!
We arrived to glorious sunshine and 60 F/15 C!!!!
The main tourist attraction is the Space
Needle. It dominates the skyline and offers fantastic views of
Seattle and the surrounding areas. To go up the Space Needle costs
$9 and after a short trip in an elevator 520ft above the ground.
You can then see views like this.....
| Close to the Space Needle is Lake Union where part of Sleepless in Seattle was set. | Part of the Seattle sky line. Top right, in the distance, you can also see Mount Rainier. You could also see Mount St. Helens until 1980 when the volcano blew itself up. |
| Nat smiling in the sunshine. Mt Rainier in the far background on the left. Puget Sound is the stretch of water to the right. | Cool! |
You can get from the site of the 1962 World's fair and the Space Needle
to the center of town via the monorail which
only costs $1 per person for a 1-way ticket. The trip lasts for only
90 seconds and drops you off in a shopping center in the center of Seattle's
downtown area.

To
my surprise I CAN recommend two pubs/Internet Cafes :-
Ned's 206 First Avenue South :- this has 31 beers on tap, 22 micro-brewed including a wit beer. The food here was pretty good. It's also an Internet cafe and they charge only $6 an hour.
The Pike Pub, 1415 First Avenue. It serves beers from American
micro-breweries and it has some bottled Belgian beers and amazingly Lambic
beers on tap! See the proof :-
It's also an internet cafe but it isn't cheap at $10 for 30 minutes.
It is close to the popular Pike Market. Both bars are within easy
walking distance from here is the Hart Brewery, Pioneer Square and the
Klondike museum (free to visit and very interesting).
There are hundreds of good coffee shops in Seattle and taking a break
from beer drinking (me, not Nathalie!) we had a couple of coffee breaks
in the sunshine. I love Coffee Latte/Coffee Verkeerd/milky coffee.
We tried Starbucks (they originate from Seattle but we also found them
all over British Columbia) and Seattle's Best Coffee (see below)
This is a replica totem pole from the one stolen from the Tillicum
Indians (the replica was paid for!).
