Average hotel price is pretty expensive!

Taxis from the airports charge a flat fee plus bridge tolls plus tip (10 to 15%). Be aware that when going back to the airport, the meter runs and you're probably better off booking a taxi beforehand from your hotel.

Hotels HOTELS Roger William's Hotel, Madison ave 31st St NY 10016, Phone 01212 684 7500. I've not been here but it's been recommended by a good friend and by the Let's Go guide (1996, I haven't checked any newer versions). Approx $200 per room +
Hotel 41Erin Hotel 41 - 206 West 41st - Favorite hotel in new York so far. Great prices, free high speed internet (if you bring a laptop) and a DVD player in your room! Very close to Times Square and the metro with direct connections to just about anywhere in Manhattan.
Washington Square Hotel - Very close to Washington Sq. in Greenwich village. Great location as the village has the bext bars & restaurants. Didn't think much of the breakfast here though.
Herald Sq Hotel

Herald Sq Hotel - A great budget buy very close to the Empire State and Macy's. My room was small but had everything I needed including en-suite bathroom & shower and TV, air-co and a free safe in the room.

Type Of Room: small single room with private bathroom
*Price Of Room: $ 85.00 + 13.25% tax and $2.00 per night occupancy tax.

Special thanks go to Brian Bennett (see Blind Tiger etc) for friendship and beer/bar advice in new York :-)

Drinks :-

Blind Tiger outsideBrian's 40th

Blind Tiger -Blind Tiger, 281 Bleecker St - A great selection of beers on draught and bottled. Lots of excellent European beers along with some of the best American beers. They also stock Ommegang which is a Belgian style beer licensed to be brewed in Cooperstown. An excellent beer! The Blind Tiger has an excellent atmosphere and has happy hours and other specials.

Cat & Jeff (eh!) Barrow Street Ale House - A great bar with very friendly staff. Some very good beers on tap and botttled. The Blind Tiger & Peculier Pub have better selections but the Barrow street has better happy hours!
Peculier Pub

Peculier Pub, 145 Bleeker Street, Greenwich Village. We managed to find this bar completely by accident. It's a fantastic bar with lots of life and a great selection of Dutch, Belgian and other foreign beers and also American micro-brewery beers.

Opening Times

D.B.A. - 41 1st Avenue - Fantastic selection of beers, mostly Belgian & British. The beers on tap seem to change every week or two which gives you a good chance to taste a lot of different beers. This place is a must along with the Peculier Pub!
Brian in Brewsky's Brian kindly introduced me to some good American beers (yes, they do exist and no, Brad, Bud isn't the only choice!). This picture was taken in Brewsky's. They have a great choice of beers but it's more expensive than The Peculier Bar. The 2 beers on the left are Pyramid Pale Ale and Stoudts and both come recommended. Below are v2 pictures of Castle Bump & Brewsky's. They're run by the same owner and are right next to each other :-

43 & 41 East 7th Street respectively, between 2nd and 3rd aves. Brewsky's has 200 bottled beers and Burp has 100 bottled and 9 draft including a number of Belgians, Ph 212 982 4576 &212 420-0671

Brian Bennett's Recommended American Micro-Brewery Beers
Me drinking the very tasty Ommegang beer
Ommegang - Brewed by the people who import Belgian ales for the Belgian Breweries, it IS brewed in the Belgian Trappist style in a brewry close to New York! It tastes absolutely fantastic! If you see some in a shop or bar then buy it!!!!!!
Blackened Voodo and Otter Creek Oktoberfest
Sierra Nevada & Brooklyn Pale Ale
Blackened Voodo and Otter Creek
Ommegang, Saison, Old Herb, Victory, Dogfish Head, Arrogant Bastard, QUAD, Old Salty & Golden Monkey
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale & Brooklyn Pale Ale. Brian (a fellow beer friend who lives in NY) recommends the Sierra Nevada as his favorite beer and he loves the Brooklyn beers too.

Restaurants

N.Y. Noodle Town

N.Y. Noodle Town - Cheap & filling Chinese food. Very tasty! It's on the edge of China Town and has won lots of awards :-)

View of the Manhattan skyline near Arthurs Landing

Arthur's Landing, 1 Pershing Road, Weehawken, New Jersey. This is quite an exclusive restaurant which offers a fantastic view of Manhattan Island. You need to catch the NY waterway ferry to the New Jersey coastline (the ferry takes 5 mins) and the restaurant is just on your left. Keep your receipts as you can get a refund for the ferry costs if you eat at the restaurant. They also do Theatre specials where you have a meal at the restaurant and they put on a coach to get you to your theatre.

Waterzooi - Belgian Bistro in Garden City out on Long Island, they have over 25 Belgian Beers on Tap, another 146 in Bottles, and Mussels 23 different ways. Recommended by Brian & Gina (2 New York friends). This place is NOT cheap so bring your plastic friend..... (No photo as yet as I haven't been there yet)

18th-23rd November 1999

Yet another cheap deal to New York from Amsterdam, combined with the thought that I hadn't seen most of what I wanted to see last time, meant a 2nd trip in 1 year to New York! This time I went with 5 friends (see below) for 5 days. The weather was superb again! It was around 15 C/65 F.

007 Dunc, Brad & Stace in Central ParkMarc and Rutchi in Battersea Park
Opening of the New bond film (The World is not enough) in New York, advertised in style!  My fellow explorers, 3 Brits & 2 Canadians :-)

23rd -25th April

Me and Monty in the reception hall of the Empire State Building

Monty (an old(!) and trusted(?) comrade) and I went to New York on a trip because I'd never been to New York before. We flew with Singapore airlines and I'd definitely recommend them. The food and service were excellent. There's a small LCD TV screen in the back of the seat in front of you. You can watch your choice of around 10 films and you can also use the screen/controller to play old Nintendo games. The flying time from Amsterdam to Newark (the closest airport to the center of NY) is around 6 3/4 hours.World Trade Towers taken from the Staten Island Ferry

Ticket for Beauty and the Beast Statue of Liberty
We went to see Beauty and the Beast on Broadway. A fantastic show! Well worth seeing. The show was great, the costumes were excellent and the scene changing was simply amazing! The Statue of Liberty, taken from the Staten Island Ferry. The ferry is a great way to see The Statue of Liberty, the World Trade towers and the Manhattan coastline. It takes about 15 minutes each way and costs only around 50 cents (Staten Island to NY) and nothing (NY to Staten Island)!
View pf the Chrysler building (left) Monty and myself. You can see the World Trade Towers in the background
Chrysler Building (left) as taken from the Empire State Building (Where else????)  Monty and myself on top of the Empire State building. It costs only about $10 to get to the 108th floor. The view is fantastic but it does take about an hour of queing to get to the top.

Ge Building (foreground) and Central Park. We didn't manage to meet any of the Friends cast :-( The Intrepid Aircraft Carrier/Museum (bottom right) and the New Jersey shoreline.
