Myself, Stacey, Brad and Dunc posing by a statue on Het Zand. Patricia is taking the picture
Brad, Stacey & Duncan are my beer students.  For their first proper lesson I took them to one of the Mecca's of good beer drinking.  They're trying to learn the subtleties of drinking beer (yes there are subtleties!).  I'm trying to turn these raw recruits into men (sorry Stace!) suave and sophisticated people!  This proved more difficult than I could imagine!  Duncan's best cheesiest smiles kept curdling the beer.  Brad & Stace were half a day late and missed the serious drinking on the Friday night.  You know what they say, don't work with children & animals.  What happens if your subjects are a mixture of both.......

Brugge is one of my favorite cities to visit, ever!  I spent my first night outside the U.K. here in the summer of 1987 while inter-railing.  I've been here 4 or 5 times and it's still magical!  The authorities allow very few cars inside the ring road.  The roads are cobbled.  All the houses/buildings are old.  The city is very well preserved, almost a fairy-tale come true.  The city seems almost entirely based on tourism and is busy all year round.  It is WELL worth a visit and for beer tourism.

That's enough culture!  I'm going to concentrate on beer tourism as there are enough pages about the normal touristy stuff.

Breweries There are 2 breweries in Bugge, the Straffe Hendrikwho produce a very nice beerStraffeHendrik2.JPG of the same name, enjoyable even to 'Heiniken drinkers"!) and the De Gouden Boom (Golden Tree) who produce Brugse TripelBrugse Tripel (excellent) and Brugs Blond.  We visited the Straffe Hendrik brewery (see above).  The tour was in English/French/Dutch and costs BFR 140 (just over 2 pounds) for a 45 minute tour with a free beer at the end and is great value for money.

BrugsBeertje
Brugs Beertje (Little Bruges Bear) - 5 Kemelstraat (for a map click here).  Open 4 p.m. until 1 a.m. Closed on Wednesdays. Has more than 300 Belgian beers on the menu. This bar came recommended by friends, locals and the Good Beer Guide.  The GBG said that if you leave Brugge without visiting this place then grieve!  The GBG says that this bar was the inspriation for the GBG.
The choice of beer is fantastic and leaves the fanatical beer drinker like myself, drooling and incapable of coherent speech before you even down your first beer.  The staff are knowledgeable and friendly and pour your beer steadily to avoid sediment getting into your beer.  It's an excellent little bar let down only by the fact that it's dedicated to beer drinkers and there is very little to drink for non beer drinkers.

Duncan, myself and Patricia in the Garre bar, drinking Garre! Garre - 1 De Garre.
This bar is between the Markt and the Burg down a small alleyway off Breidalstraat  We loved this place so much that we went both nights of our weekend trip.  It has it's own beer (Garre, you can see 3 glasses in the picture) a slightly spicy triple.  There's an upstairs too with plenty of seating.  Brad & Stace couldn't make the first evening due to work (about bloody time! (in joke!)).  That gave us time to drink some beer before The Canadians 'drink the place dry' Eh! arrived.

Brad drinking Verboden Vrucht (one of his fave's) in the CuriosaTaverneCuriosa.JPG Curiosa - 22 Vlamingstraat. The Vlamingstraat heads off to the north from the Markt and is only a couple of minutes walk.  You need to go down some stairs into a cellar for this one.  The bar is long and thin but had a great atmosphere.
