Bok beer festival held by PINT

I worked in Amsterdam.  It's a wonderful city, always full of life no matter the time of day or night.  Amsterdam is honest about what it is and so I wouldn't describe it as seedy, more, full of opportunities!  Even the red light district is pretty.  It is based around a couple of canals.  The bridges are lit up at night which makes the red Light District (De Walletjes in Dutch) quite pretty!  It's quite amusing watching the tourists gawk at windows as they wander past :-).  Trams link most parts of the city.
Local Delicacies :- You should try poffertjes.  These are little bits of cooked dough with powdered sugar on top.  You can get them doused in liquers too.  Yeah!  Try also the fantastic array of pancakes that you can get with some incredibly strange toppings with fruits, meats, liquers etc.  Indonesian food is very popular in Holland (Indonesia is a former Dutch colony) and you should try it whilst you're over here.
Drinks :- have a look at my beer page if you're a beer fan.  If you like liquers then try Jenever.  It's a Dutch variant on gin.

Paas ij BeerPaas Ij Beer - Brewed locally in Amsterdam next to a windmill!

Bars :- Try the Belgique , In De Wildeman (my favorite), Het Arend's Nest or De Beiaard.

In De Wildeman

Friends enjoying a good beer

Bar Staff & Owners of the Wildeman

In De Wildeman My favorite bar in Amsterdam! It has an excellent selection with 18 different beers on tap and 200 bottled beers at any one time (from all around the world).  It is the only Dutch bar I've found with an extra room with no smoking allowed!
To get to In De Wildeman on (Kolksteeg 3 (020) 638 23 48, open noon - 1am Mon-Sat & Sun 14-21) leave the central train station (Amsterdam CS) and head down the main street (the Damrak).  You will see a canal with lots of boats on your left.  When you run out of water (approx 200m) turn right (just after Teasers) down an alleyway.  You will go over a pedestrianised shopping street (Nieuwendijk), just keep going for another minute and on the left you will find In De Wildeman.

Het Arendsnest (The Eagle's Nest) - Herengracht 90

My 2nd favorite bar in Amsterdam! A great place with a fantastic choice of beer. Even more incredible is that it speciliases in DUTCH beer. Well worth a visit!

Elfde Gebod Bar in Amsterdam, 5 Zeedijk (near Amsterdam CS train station)"The 11th Commandment" (you shall enjoy yourself :-)) bar is a new one to my page.  It's a cute little bar within 5 minutes walk of the central station.  A very good selection of beers and friendly bar staff.  It's closed Mondays (in winter) and Tuesdays. See also John Green's site

Belgique (below) is a bit small but it's well worth the effort.  It's what the Dutch would describe as 'gezellig'.  The nearest English equivalent is 'cozy'.  There are about 80 beers (a lot of  Lambic Belgian beers).  To get to the Belgique follow the directions to the Wildeman but turn left onto Nieuwendijk instead of going straight on.  About the 4th turning on your right you'll see the Belgique on Gravenstraat 2.
Cafe BelgiqueFrom Left to right Swedish, 2 Dutch, Italian and myself in the Belgique

De Erste Klasse 1st Class cafe/bar De Beiaard on the Spui
"De Erste Klasse" (on platform 2b, Amsterdam CS (020) 6250131) what was the 1st class waiting room for Amsterdam Centraal train station in the late 1800's is now a 1st class bar/cafe.  The perfect place to meet anyone if you're travelling by train to Amsterdam.  It's on platform 2 (head in the opposite direction to platform 1).  The decor inside is true to the late 1800's, has a huge ceiling and a reasonable selection of beers (Westmalle double & triple and Duvel).  Very atmospheric!  You can even sit outside on chairs outside the cafe and people watch!  De Beiaard (30 Spui) :- A great place to have a beer.  Good atmosphere and a great selection of around 70 beers.  It's close to the Historical Museum (see the map).
Cafe Gollem
Gollem - 4 Raamsteeg - Has probably the largest selection of beers in Amsterdam and it's only 10 minutes walk from the Dam.
Food in Amsterdam

Al's PlaiceAl's Plaice - One for the ex-pats.  It's a British Fish & Chip shop in Amsterdam!  You can find it on Nieuwendijk 10.  It's close to the Centraal station.  You can see Nieuwendijk on the map above, next to De Wildeman.

AVOID Alphonso's chain of Mexican restaurants.  I've been there twice, once in the Hague and once in Amsterdam, and both times the service has been unacceptably slow!

HotelsHotels :-
I've only ever heard one place recommended but I've never stopped here.  I've heard that it's cheap, good and very central (2 minutes from the central train station).
Old Nickel :- Dr A.P. Boer, Nieuwe Brugsteeg 11, Phone +31 (020) 624 19 12, Fax +31 (020) 620 76 83

Beer Shops
Bierkoning, Paleistraat 125Joris at the Bier KoningGreat place to buy Belgian & Dutch beer, also has a great selection from around the world.  Very friendly staff.  You can also buy beer glasses, books etc.

Sites to See & Advice

the Monument (Dam Square) The Palace (Dam Square)
The Monument & The Palace, both on Dam square.  Dam square is easy walking distance (5 mins) from the central train station.  Queen Beatrix actually lives and works in the Hague
De Kast - a famous Dutch band playing on the Dam 6/5/98DE KAST!
De Kast (amongst others) played on Bevrijding's Dag or Liberation day 1998 and Koninginnedag 1998 in the Hague.  They are a famous Dutch band from a region called Friesland which has it's own langauge, Fries.  Some of the songs including their most famous hit :- In De Nije Dei (in the New Day), are sung in Fries.

Madame Tussaud's (Dam 20) - by Madeleine Floy
A truly interesting experience with lifelike replicas of many famous people including pop stars e.g. Tina Turner, contemporary figures like Tony Blair, Bill Clinton, Wim Kok etc., also historical figures like Charlie Chaplin, Marilyn Monroe (complete with billowing white skirt).  My favourite theme was when a 7m giant descended from the ceiling and he was made up of sailing ships, clogs etc.  Doors opened in his abdomen and chest showing typical Dutch scenes and he spoke with a very loud, deep, booming voice giving information (in Dutch and English) about the different themes to be found at MT's.
Very interesting and well worth a visit.  I spent an enjoyable hour and a half here.
