Finally saw my 1st living kiwi!!!! The kiwi's were in a center on Mount Bruce on the way to Napier. They run a program to try and get the numbers of kiwi's up. The egg's get eaten by introduced species like possums. They are nocturnal creatures so the center turns on the lights at night and they're kept in the dark during the day. The photos below have to be taken without flash of course so I apologise for the quality!
Napier got wiped out in an earthquake in 1931. There were 2 years of rapid rebuilding after that. This was during the time that art deco was popular so most of the buildings were rebuilt in that style! It and Miami share the title of Art Deco capitals of the world.
