Kaikoura 30th Jan - 1st Feb
Our whale watching trip got cancelled due to high winds :-( I decided to stay an extra day or so to make sure I got to see them! Kakoura is perfect for whales because the bay has a flat shelf which abruptly turns into an underwater cliff. This is probably the best place in the worls to see whales! Our midday trip got cancelled so I had to do an early morning trip. Most of you know how much I hate early mornings! It turned out to be well worth it! If the weather is bad then boats can get cancelled. This happened to the boat after us. We were warned about sea sickness, there were 2m swells out to see. People who suffer from sea sickness were warned to do it another time. There were some seriously impressive computer graphics on the boat! We did strike lucky, we saw 3 whales which is double the average. We were feeling pretty chuffed when we went home :-) Mother nature had one more surprise for us. On the way back some dolphins put on a spectacular show for us. It's very hard to put into words how I felt. It was a very moving experience! Well recommended! The high point of my trip to NZ so far.
